A Bedford neighborhood is cleaning up after vandals hit at least 15 homes in the area overnight Friday.

Police said the homes were hit in the Village of Oak Park neighborhood.

The vandals threw corn, paint, mustard, ketchup and other items on cars and garage doors between midnight and 5 a.m., police said.

One victim said the vandals had to walk up his driveway to commit the crime, a brazen act, he said.

Many neighbors were helped out by a woman vandalized herself, Tina Kitts.

Kitts owns T.A.S.K. Auto Eco Wash, a car detailing business, and had the right tools to clean cars up quickly.

"With this sun, this stuff will bake on fast," Kitts said.

With a hand-cart full of soaps and waxes, Kitts was able to help many of the people on her street.

"We just got the whole neighborhood together and started cleaning up the cars everybody pitched in cleaning each one, one by one," Kitts said.

Neighbors credit Kitts with saving them from having permanently damaged cars.

No word on what charges the vandals may face if they're found.

The cast of Kidd Kraddick in the Morning plan to continue on with the show even after the show's  namesake has died.

Kidd Kraddick died while attending a golf tournament in Louisiana that benefited his children's charity, Kidd's Kids. Preliminary autopsy results from the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office said Kraddick died of cardiac disease.

On Monday, the cast of the morning show returned to the airwaves for an abbreviated show in which they memorialized the longtime host.

The cast then retreated and took a few days to sort out their future while fans started a petition asking them to continue on in Kidd's absence.

On Friday, KHKS-FM (KISS FM) released the following statement on their web site regarding the show:

In an effort to keep you up to date on what is going on, we wanted to let you know that the cast had a great meeting Thursday about the show moving forward.

They are all excited about continuing Kidd's legacy and are ready to get back on the air. Monday's show, although slightly different, is going to be funny, topical and emotional. It is the same show you fell in love with when we signed on.

Yes, the name is still Kidd Kraddick In the Morning. Kidd worked hard to build this brand, and the bottom line is that the show is Kidd Kraddick In the Morning.

We ask that you be patient with the new version of the show and allow it some time to grow.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said its investigators found "sufficient evidence" that Beamers Private Club in Dallas sold alcohol to an already intoxicated person either late Dec. 7 or early Dec. 8 and conducted "practices that promote excessive consumption by patrons."

The Dallas nightclub where former Cowboys player Josh Brent last stopped before being involved in a fatal crash that killed a teammate may have over-served patrons that night, state liquor authorities said Friday.

Brent is charged with intoxication manslaughter in the Dec. 8 crash that killed Jerry Brown, a practice squad player and Brent's college teammate. He is scheduled for trial next month, and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, though he could also get probation.

TABC did not name Brent, but acknowledged that it wouldn't continue its case against Beamers until Brent's criminal case ends. The agency declined to release its full report.

Lt. John Graham of TABC said investigators think Beamers Private was Brent's last stop before the crash in the Dallas suburb of Irving. TABC did not interview Brent, but spoke to others who were at the bar that night, Graham said.

Beamers Private could lose its liquor license as a result of the investigation, Graham said.

Owners of Beamers Private did not immediately return an email and a phone message.

Brent retired from the Cowboys last month after his career was placed on hold.

"I am at a point where my main focus is all about getting the priorities in my life in order," Brent said in a statement provided by the team last month. "Those priorities are more important than football. Doing the right things in life are more important than football. I love the game very much. I love my teammates, but this is the right thing for me to do."

Irving police have accused Brent of driving with a blood-alcohol content more than twice the legal limit the night of the crash. His attorney, George Milner, has filed a motion to have the blood test performed on Brent thrown out. A judge has not yet ruled on that request.

A hit-and-run driver plowed into a crowd of pedestrians near the Venice Boardwalk on Saturday afternoon, killing one person and injuring 11 others, authorities said.

Police have detained a possible suspect and a vehicle of interest, Lt. Andrew Neiman of the Los Angeles Police Department told NBC4. Officials later reported that a man in his 20s turned himself in to police in the neighboring city of Santa Monica.

The crash occurred about 6 p.m. near the end of Dudley Avenue (map), officials said.

Of the injured, 10 required hospitalization. One person remained in critical condition late Saturday and two others received minor injuries and declined hospitalization, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

The driver fled the scene after the crash, said Officer Jorge Torres of the Los Angeles Police Department. Torres described the suspect's vehicle as a dark-colored sedan.

A man who identified himself as "Paolo" and who works at a nearby cafe told NBC4 that he heard what sounded like a car speeding down a narrow alleyway, then screams.

He and others at the restaurant said they caught a glimpse of a dark-colored sedan.

The Venice Boardwalk is known for its street performers and eclectic shops and restaurants, and is considered a major Southern California tourist attraction.

Caught on Cam: "Panhandler" Pranks Passengers

It's a scenario that anyone who rides a subway is familiar with. A man or woman enters the subway car with a cup in their hand and proceeds to tell all the passengers their life story in order to get some change.

But as seen in the CollegeHumor video embedded below, one such panhandler had a very different message as well as a different kind of request when he spoke to SEPTA passengers a few days ago. Here's a hint. He's a bit more "fortunate" than the average panhandler…

Police arrested a driver in connection with a deadly crash at the Venice boardwalk, police said Sunday.

Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, was booked into the Los Angeles County Jail on a murder charge in connection with Saturday's crash, police and online jail records said.

The news comes as a woman killed in the crash was identified, Los Angeles County Coroner's officials said.

Alice Gruppioni, 32, of Italy, died in the crash that happened at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the 100 block of Dudley Avenue, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The crash also injured 11 others, including one critically.

Of the 12 people initially reported injured, Gruppioni died from her injuries, LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman said. Another victim was in critical condition, two were in serious condition and eight were being treated for less-serious injuries, police said.

After the crash, the suspect allegedly ran away after abandoning the car at Ocean Park Boulevard and Beverly Avenue, where it was located by authorities.

An LAPD K-9 bomb squad was called in to check the abandoned car for explosive devices in what Neiman termed an abundance of caution.

Police said the suspect turned himself in at the Santa Monica police station. He was later booked into an LAPD jail.

Witnesses said it appeared the car, described as a 2008 to 2010 black or dark blue Dodge Avenger, drove toward pedestrians as it swerved on and off the curb.

The Venice Boardwalk is known for its street performers and eclectic shops and restaurants, and is considered a major Southern California tourist attraction.

SF Crash Survivor Describes Normal Flight That Fast Went Wrong

Written By Unknown on Senin, 08 Juli 2013 | 00.29

Nothing seemed amiss aboard Asiana Airlines Flight 214 from Seoul, South Korea, as it approached San Francisco International Airport just before noon Saturday: the plane was on time, the sky was clear, and everyone, including the crew, was getting ready to land.

Benjamin Levy, a businessman seated in the Boeing 777 jetliner's 32nd row, watched through the window. A world traveler, he'd flown into the airport many times. He knew what to expect. So, as the plan approached a runway along the San Francisco Bay, he saw right away that it was too low. It didn't look like the plane was going to make the runway.

The pilot must have seen the same thing, because the plane suddenly lurched upward with a sudden jolt of power, Levy said.

"When he realized that, he put more gas to try to correct the plane again and it was too late," Levy recalled in a phone interview with NBC Bay Area. "So we hit the runway pretty bad and then we starting going back up in the air again. And then we landed again pretty hard."

Levy added: "It felt like the guy missed the runway quite completely. He tried to correct, which probably helped. We would have hit the rocks."

Now the plane was on the ground, but panic was just starting to set in.

"It was surreal," Levy said. "A lot of people screaming and not really believing what was happening to them. I wasn't believing it either."

Many of the 291 passengers were hurt, but Levy wasn't in too bad of shape. He looked out the window again. A piece of a wing was gone. There was debris all over the place. He got up, helped to open an emergency exit and started ushering people through the opening.

"People were pushing each other out," Levy said. "The hostess was trying to help as well. There was a lot of commotion going on."

Firefighters were climbing aboard. Smoke was starting to appear. Soon the plane would catch fire.

Someone told Levy to get out of there. So he did, making it into one of the first ambulances to San Francisco General Hospital. He was pretty lucky: some cuts and bruises and maybe a broken rib.

"I am (in pain), but not too bad compared to other people," Levy said.

Officials confirmed two people were found dead outside the wreckage, female Chinese teenagers who were seated at the back of the plane. 182 people were taken to one of nine Bay Area hospitals, including 49 with serious injuries including burns and fractures.

The NTSB arrived on the scene Saturday to lead the investigation into the crash.

Levy said he felt terrible for the people injured worse than he was. But "it could have been a lot, lot worse," he said.

Investigation of 6-Year-Old's Slaying Continues

Investigators were back out in the neighborhood of a 6-year-old Saginaw girl whose body was found in a street a mile away from her home. Businesses and residents plan to wear purple ribbons starting this weekend in remembrance of Alanna Gallagher.

Saginaw Child Found in Tarp Identified

The FBI, Texas Rangers and local authorities are trying to reconstruct the last hours of life for 6-year-old Alanna Gallagher. She was found dead and wrapped in a tarp on Monday. The medical examiner is still working to determine the cause of her death.

More Photos and Videos

As Saginaw Police and the FBI continue to track leads and investigate new tips, people in Saginaw do their part to keep hope and a memory alive.  Around trees, around light poles, even around dogs necks, purple ribbons reveal a community in mourning.

"We're all tight around here," said Mark Valdov, who walked his dogs Watson and Anna down the street by the memorial to Alanna Gallagher near where the six-year-old's body was found.  Both dogs had purple ribbons around their necks.

"Everybody talks and once we found out this [the effort to get everyone to don purple] was going on and the folks at the child care were passing out the purple ribbons. We stopped by with I don't know how many other people last night to show our support for the family and the little girl."

Takisha James wore a purple shirt while running Saturday errands. She too is thinking about her city's loss and believes the purple is a way to keep people talking about the girl's unsolved murder.

"I do believe it's good to keep the word out there because actually it's made me aware," said James.  "I'm seeing red trucks everywhere and I'm like 'okay, is this the truck they've been talking about' so you know it makes you more aware."

Some area businesses are getting behind the effort, too.  Every cashier at the Walmart was wearing a purple shirt or a purple ribbon in memory of Alanna Gallagher.

The woman responsible for this effort, Rachel Monk, stopped to buy more purple ribbons and purple shirts for herself and her children.  Monk says she gets a warm feeling seeing all the purple around town.

"It makes me happy to see that Saginaw is actually the community I thought we were," said Monk.

"We're not going to shut ourselves in our house and shy away from tragedy.  We're actually going to come out.  We're going to show our support, we're going to be there, we're going to help."

A 5-year-old guide dog that went missing after earlier this week has been found and reunited with his owner.

A facebook profile dedicated to the missing dog posted this message:

Sidney has been found! Thank you to Lesa who posted about a found dog sign on our facebook page and left the number!!! Sidney is doing well and has been in a wonderful home since Thursday morning.

The black Labrador belonged to Caroline Mosely of Southeast Dallas. Mosely is legally blind. They have been together for four years.  The animal ran away after being spooked by fireworks.

"We're trained to pay attention to him, and he's trained to pay attention to me," Mosely told NBCDFW on Friday. "He's trained to show me the steps. He's trained to stop at every entry doorway, so he lets me know I'm at a door."

A press release sent to NBCDFW from Guide Dogs for the Blind said Mosely and Sidney have been reunited.

North Texan Stranded After San Fran. Crash

advertisement

Saturday's deadly plane crash of an Asiana Airlines flight at San Francisco International Airport has had ripple effects on North Texas.

The flight packed with more than 300 people slammed into the runway while landing at San Francisco airport Saturday. At least two people died in the crash, while another 181 people were taken to hospitals, most with minor injuries, authorities said.

DFW International Airport reported at least eight departure flights being cancelled, and others delayed, by SFO's closure and then limited runway availability.

And at least five other flights set to arrive from San Francisco were also cancelled.

One of those flights unable to get out would have brought a vacationing North Texan back home. Steve Embury, who runs a blinds business in Collin County, was waiting for his Virgin American flight to board when he looked up to see the aftermath of Asiana flight 214's crash.

"All of a sudden I heard a little bit of commotion and I looked up and there's a big giant ball of dust, the plane went into the dirt," Embury told NBC 5 by phone on Saturday.

Embury is booked to return to DFW on Sunday and is staying at a hotel across from the airport where he can still see the remnants of the Asiana Boeing 777.

The crash at SFO forced Dallas-based Southwest Airlines to suspend its operations at the airport for the day. The airline said it hoped to get its final scheduled flights into the airport on Saturday night. Southwest has been busing passengers to other Bay Area airports and adding more flights to Oakland and San Jose .

Asiana doesn't fly passenger flights into DFW but does have a presence at the airport. Asiana Cargo has flown into DFW since September 2012.

The website flight mapper.net says six cargo flights from Incheon Airport in Seoul, South Korea arrive at DFW each week.

Embury, meantime, hopes to get home on Sunday but isn't overly worried about his flight or surprised to see an accident like what he witnesses on Saturday.

"I was thinking of that the other day, I'm surprised they don't have more accidents," he said, mentioning how close to the water you fly when landing.

Most airlines including Fort Worth based American Airlines and Dallas based Southwest Airlines have instituted special re-booking policies because of the crash. Those policies impact any flights on Saturday and Sunday.

Mark Engebretson with Palo Pinto Emergency Management confirmed to NBC DFW that search crews and dive teams with the Brazos River Authority and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are searching the Possum Kingdom Lake area for a missing 27-year-old white female. Her name or description has not been released.

Engebretson said she went missing around 9:20 p.m. Saturday right before the "Hell's Gate Fireworks" show was to begin.

The fireworks display was delayed and then later canceled.

Possum Kingdom Lake is in Palo Pinto County, about 70 miles west of Fort Worth.

2 Killed, 182 Injured in SFO Plane Crash

RAW VIDEO: Eyewitness Description of Plane Crash

Eyewitness Brian Piper describes what he saw when an Asiana Airlines plane crash landed at SFO.

More Photos and Videos

Two people were killed and 182 were hospitalized after Asiana Airlines Flight 214 from Seoul, South Korea, crashed and burst into flames at San Francisco International Airport, forcing passengers to jump down the emergency inflatable slides to safety.

The Boeing 777 with 307 people on board crashed as it was landing on Runway 28 Left at SFO at 11:27 a.m. PDT.

Two people who were found outside the wreckage died in the crash, both Chinese female teenagers seated at the back of the plane, the President of Asiana Airline said in a press conference in Seoul. Autopsies will be performed today on both victims.

SFO officials said 182 people were transported to area hospitals, 49 of those with critical injuries. Initially, 60 people were considered unaccounted for, but San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee confirmed at a 7:45 p.m. press conference that every one on board the plane had been accounted for.

"This could have been much worse," Lee said. "We are very lucky that we have so many survivors, but there are many who are critically injured. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them."

Federal investigators said it was too early to determine a cause. A representative of the National Transportation Safety Board arrived on scene late Saturday and took control of the investigation.

The sources who spoke with NBC News said the pilot did not make a distress call before landing. The plane crashed in favorable weather — partly cloudy skies and light wind.

SFO officials said a total of 307 people were on board, 291 passengers and 16 crew members. Asiana Airlines reports the passengers included 77 Koreans, 141 "of Chinese descent," 61 U.S. citizens, three from India, one Japanese, one from Vietnam, and seven of unknown origin.

"It was a bit surreal," said Flight 214 passenger Benjamin Levy, "a lot of people screaming, not believing what was happening. I couldn't believe it either."

Helicopter video of the scene showed a large plane with severe burn damage to its midsection. The tail section was detached. Runway No. 28 was strewn with debris. The line of debris stretched to the bay.

An eyewitness on the ground described what she saw: "I was sitting on the 4th floor of at my room at the Marriot, overlooks the runway, saw the plane tumbling, nose was down, tail in the air, flipped over and landed, couldn't tell if it was upside down or right side up."

A firewoman was onboard the plane before all the passengers were evacuated, Levy said.

At least two passengers came out of the water -- although the plane was not in the water -- when firefighters arrived on the scene. It is possible they sought out the water to deal with flames or burns.

Nine Bay Area hospitals attended to victims of the crash.

San Francisco General Hospital received 52 patients from the crash, a hospital spokeswoman said. The hospital received four waves of patients, including an initial wave of  10 critical patients, hospital spokeswoman Rachel Kagan said. Of those initial 10, two were children.

Stanford's Lucile Packard Children's Hospital treated 45 patients. Sixteen of those were admitted. Three of those were in critical condition and 10 were in serious condition as of a 7:45 p.m. update.

Flights in and out of SFO were suspended for about four hours. Two of the airport's four runways were reopened by 3:30 p.m., allowing limited service, according to SFO. Airport spokesman Doug Yakel said the airport's other two runways will not reopen until NTSB investigators give approval.

Arriving flights were being diverted to Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento and Los Angeles. Extra staff and shuttle buses were on hand at Mineta San Jose International Airport to handle the 27 planes that were rerouted there from SFO.

The flight, which originated from Shanghai, China, left Seoul's Incheon International Airport 10 hours and 23 minutes before its crash landing, according to FlightAware, a website that tracks air traffic control. The website reports a total of 242 flights originating at SFO and 186 scheduled to land at SFO were canceled.

NBC Bay Area spoke with passenger Levy shortly after the crash: "We were approaching perfectly well, but we were too low, when the pilot realized it, he put some more gas to correct it, but it was too late, so we hit the runway pretty bad, and we started going up in the air again, and we landed pretty hard." NBC Bay Area's full interview with Levy is posted below.

Federal sources told NBC News that there was no indication of terrorism. President Barack Obama has been made aware of the situation, according to White House officials.

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and Federal Aviation Administrator Michael P. Huerta released a joint statement in response to the crash: "The Department of Transportation and the FAA are working closely to assist the NTSB with its investigation. Our thanks go to today's first responders and our thoughts and prayers go out to the passengers and crew of Asiana Flight 214 and their families."

National Transportation Safety Board investigators arrived on the scene in San Francisco late Saturday night, according to NTSB's Twitter feed.

"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today's incident at SFO," Boeing said on its Twitter account. "We stand ready to assist the NTSB."

"The 777 has a fantastic record," said Tom Haueter, who retired last year from the National Transportation Safety Board, where he was the head of aviation accident investigations.

In a statement, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said, "Our city is immeasurably grateful for the swift response of the flight crew who quickly evacuated passengers; for the air traffic controllers who effectively diverted traffic; for the brave first responders and the hospital staff who are ensuring the swift recovery of the injured.  Their actions are a testament to the strength, courage, and selflessness that defines the Bay Area."

"We are grateful for the courage and swift response of the first responders whose actions surely prevented an even greater tragedy," said California Governor Jerry Brown in his own statement.

Last year, SFO saw 317,000 takeoffs and landings of commercial airplanes, all without a fatality. There had not been a fatal accident at SFO in the past 75 years, until Saturday, NBC Bay Area's Stephen Stock reported.

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg was supposed to be on the flight, but chose United instead.

She posted the following on Facebook:

Taking a minute to be thankful and explain what happened. My family, colleagues Debbie Frost, Charlton Gholson and Kelly Hoffman and I were originally going to take the Asiana flight that just crash-landed. We switched to United so we could use miles for my family's tickets. Our flight was scheduled to come in at the same time, but we were early and landed about 20 minutes before the crash.

Our friend Dave David Eun was on the Asiana flight and he is fine.

Thank you to everyone who is reaching out - and sorry if we worried anyone.

Serious moment to give thanks.

A 7-year-old Mesquite boy drowned Saturday night while swimming in Joe Pool Lake.

Ivan Salinas was swimming with his mother when she saw him slip beneath the water surface. He was not wearing a life jacket.

The boy was underwater for at least five minutes before a bystander pulled him to shore.

CPR was performed. But Salinas was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Salinas is the second boy to drown at Joe Pool Lake this year.

On May 27, 8-year-old Aaron Starks drowned at a public swimming area of Joe Pool Lake at Cedar Hill State Park in Grand Prairie.

2 Chinese Teens ID'd in SF Crash, Black Boxes Recovered

The two people killed when Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crashed at San Francisco International Airport have been identified as 16-year-old schoolgirls from eastern China, as National Transportation Safety Board officials on the scene begin their investigation.

NTSB officials told NBC News they have recovered both black boxes from Saturday's ill-fated flight which originated from Shanghai, China, and stopped over in Seoul, South Korea's capital. The NTSB lab will analyze the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder to determine what went wrong.

Photos posted on the NTSB's Twitter page overnight showed Chairman Deborah Hersman and Investigator-in-Charge Bill English looking at interior damage.

"I think we're very thankful that the numbers were not worse when it came to fatalities and injuries," Hersman said on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday. "It could have been much worse."

NTSB tweeted that it will hold a press briefing at 4:30 p.m. ET to provide updates on the investigation.

182 people were transported to area hospitals, 49 with critical injuries, after Flight 214 crashed and burst into flames Saturday morning upon landing, SFO officials said.

According to San Francisco International Airport spokesman Doug Yakel, a key component of the airport's instrument landing system that tracks and guides an arriving airplane's course was turned off on Saturday, NBC News reported.

Helicopter video of the scene showed the plane with severe burn damage to the top of its fuselage. The jumbo jet's tail section was detached and a line of debris stretched to the bay.

Passengers described chaos in the aftermath of the accident, with many of the 291 onboard escaping by sliding down emergency inflatable slides.

"It was surreal," Benjamin Levy, a businessman seated in the Boeing 777 jetliner's 32nd row, told NBC Bay Area. "A lot of people screaming and not really believing what has happening to them. I wasn't believing it either."

Levy said it seemed the plane had been coming in too low for landing at San Francisco, and the pilot "missed the runway quite completely."

"He tried to correct, which probably helped," he said. "We would have hit the rocks."

Six people remained in critical condition Sunday at San Francisco General Hospital, one of nine Bay Area hospitals attending to victims of the crash. Injuries included broken bones and burns, NBC News reported.

For full U.S. and world news coverage, visit NBCNews.com.

Asiana Airlines President Yoon Young-doo identified the two fatalities Sunday as female teenagers from China, saying they had been sitting at the back of the plane. The South Korean airline's official Weibo microblog later said both girls, Ye Mengtuan and Wang Linjia, were 16-year-old students at Jiangshan Middle School.

Speaking at a news conference in Seoul, Young-doo said that he did not believe the flight suffered an engine defect. He described the four pilots aboard the plane at the time of the crash as "skilled," the AP reported. Three of the pilots had each logged more than 10,000 hours of flight time, he said.

Still, Young-doo bowed and said that he was "extending my deep apology" to passengers, their families and South Koreans.

Education officials in China said that at least 70 students and teachers from the highly competitive Jiangshan Middle School were on Flight 214 heading to summer camps, The Associated Press reported.

The two students who perished were among 30 high school students from the town of Jiangshan in Zhejiang province, eastern China, Chinese media reported, according to The New York Times.

All were set to attend a 15-day English language program at California universities, according to a Shanghai newspaper, the Times reported.

Wang Linjia, posted her last messages to her account on a Chinese microblogging site on June 5, which read, "Maybe time can dilute the coffee in the cup, it can flatten the contour of memory,"  according to Chinese media, the Times reported. Then an hour laters she wrote "Go."

Aboard the plane was also a group of 30 students and six teachers from north China's Shanxi Province, Xinhua, China's official news service reported.

Federal investigators said Saturday it was too early to determine why the plane crashed into SFO's Runway 28.

The plane crashed in favorable weather, partly cloudy skies and light wind,NTSB officials who spoke with NBC News said.

SFO officials said a total of 307 people were on board Flight 214: 291 passengers and 16 crew members. Asiana Airlines said the passengers included 77 Koreans, 141 "of Chinese descent," 61 U.S. citizens, three from India, one Japanese, one from Vietnam, and seven of unknown origin.

Flights in and out of SFO were suspended for about four hours after the crash, the first fatal accident at the airport in 75 years.

Saturday's crash was also the second major accident invoving a Boeing 777 in the 18 years the model has been in service, according to the AP. That earlier accident occured Jan. 17, 2008, when British Airways Flight 28 from China landed about 1,000 feet short of the runway at London's Heathrow Airport. The impact broke the jet's landing gear and caused 47 injuries.

BART Unions Moving Forward With Planned Strike

Written By Unknown on Senin, 01 Juli 2013 | 00.29

It has been 16 years since the last time BART workers walked off the job, but with each passing hour the threat of a strike seems more and more likely come Monday.

The unions contract expires Sunday at midnight with a threatened strike to start the workweek commute.

Saturday's negotiation session ended before 5 p.m. with the union saying that management was "a no show."  A union spokesperson told gathered reporters in Oakland that a strike was likely.

Union officials said they would move forward with plans for a BART strike on Monday after walking out of the contract talks today.

"BART management is engaging in what is called "surface-bargaining," said Jose Mooney, spokesperson for Service Employees International Union 1021. "They're trying to appear in public like they are working to keep the trains running, but they're doing nothing to respond to good-faith offers by BART workers aimed at avoiding a strike."

BART officials said they had told the union they would have a proposal ready by 5 p.m., but when they submitted it to the mediator at 3:45 p.m., they were told the negotiators had already walked out.

BART spokesman Rick Rice said management delivered a new economic proposal to the mediator Saturday afternoon, and received a response from the union to a proposal made Thursday. He said the latest BART proposal increased the salary offer and reduced the amount employees would contribute to pensions and health care.

"We're disappointed," Rice said of the union's decision to break off talks.

Friday's negotiation sessions did not go well either. The session started late and ended at 10 p.m. with no reported progress.

Talks are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. each day. It was not clear if any talks would take place Sunday.

Antonette Bryant with ATU Local 1555 said Saturday morning that negotiators had their suitcases packed and were prepared to stay at the bargaining table until a contract is negotiated and a potential strike was averted, but he session didn't last even six hours.

On Friday, negotiations were supposed to begin at 11 a.m. but were delayed for hours.

They were pushed off until after the BART Board of Directors' meeting, set to end around 6:30 p.m. Both sides blamed the other for the stall.

BART's two employee unions, SEIU Local 1021 and ATU Local 1555, are asking for a higher salary increase: a five percent increase for the next three years, plus a cost-of-living adjustment. BART is offering a one percent increase for the next four years. The biggest concession from either side has been BART's decision to remove conditions off of the increase and make it a guaranteed raise.

Talks began April 1 and quickly soured.

"They refused to allow us to come to the table to work together, get resolution early so we would not put the public through this," said John Arantes, president of SEIU Local 1021. "Instead they pushed us off till May 13."

MORE: Oakland Unions Threaten General Strike

"We have been waiting since 11 a.m. We have not met with the district and we are still waiting," said Antonette Brown, president of ATU Local 1555.

But BART said the unions did not give a response to the agency's latest proposal Thursday night, and as of 6 p.m. Friday, still had not heard back. Rick Rice, a BART spokesman, said the agency finished responding to every part of the unions' requests, agreeing to half a dozen of them and changing others in hopes of moving the talks forward. Rice would not get into specifics.

"They're currently paying nothing for their pensions we feel they should pay a small part of that," said Rice. "We've got debt interest to pay, millions of dollars committed to new train cars already ordered. The benefits part of the package for all BART workers is $50,000 - it's one of the fastest rising costs in the system. It's something we can no longer ask taxpayers and riders to pay for."

But union leaders are calling BART's offer an "insult." Brown said union members gave back more than 100 million dollars in concessions in 2009 and deserve to get paid back. Union members also don't believe BART's statement that the agency has no surplus.

"In '09 they said they had a deficit. It ended up being 300 million dollars in the plus," said Leo Ruiz, a member of ATU Local 1555. "Now, they're telling us there's no surplus. There's 125 million dollars a year for next ten years. Who do you trust? They lied to us in '09. They're lying to us now."

If talks don't smooth out and a settlement cannot be reached by 11:59 p.m. Sunday, when the unions' contracts expire, the strike is on.

And that isn't just stranding the estimated 400,000 people who ride BART every day. AC Transit workers may also go on strike Monday morning. It has an average of 175,000 riders every day. Other transit agencies are set to try and help, including Caltrain and SamTrans, but it won't be nearly enough to prevent what could be gridlock on the roads.

If there's a strike, BART is set to offer a courtesy shuttle during peak commute hours, but that will only serve an estimated 2,000-4,000 people each direction each day. Riders are encouraged to plan ahead: telecommute and carpool. If people choose the latter, they can park in any of BART's 33 station parking lots for free.

Wall-E the Pet Wallaby's Day Out

The Grand Prairie Police Department caught a wandering wallaby in a residential neighborhood on Friday.

The Grand Prairie Police Department gets interesting 911 calls, but this one will be talked about for days.

Police in the Dallas suburb received a 911 call just before 7:45 a.m. Friday about a kangaroo hopping westbound in the 2200 block of Prince John Drive.

Officers arrived but didn't catch a kangaroo -- the animal was, in fact, a wallaby.

"I have been doing this for 20 years, and I will probably never see something like this again," Detective Lyle Gensler said.

John Richardson, the 911 caller, sent NBC 5 DFW a photo of the Wall-E the wallaby sitting at his front door.

Grand Prairie police said the wallaby was very excited, saying officers had a hard time controlling him while they waited for animal control to arrive. When asked how he knew how to catch a wallaby, Charles Munoz, the animal control officer, replied "Animal Planet" with a laugh.

The wallaby had tags and was returned to his owner unharmed.

"As far as we know, we don't have anything in our city ordinance that says you can't have one, " said Danielle Tate, animal services manager.

Wall-E's owners came to get him from animal control after friends saw on social media that he was loose. Their son-in-law said they believe someone tried to steal Wall-E because their fence was ripped.

Jessica Churchill, the owners' daughter, said her father gave the wallaby to her mother for Christmas after she said she wanted a kangaroo someday.

NBC 5's Julie Fine contributed to this report.

Angel's Beverage in Plano is the first store to sell liquor in the city since voters approved the referendum last month.

"We've been waiting 25 years for this to happen," said Shawn O'Connor, the wine director at Angel's Beverage,

Throughout the day, customers stopped by to get some of the hard stuff. For Plano resident Nancy Monnette it's about the convenience.

"It's very convenient for us because traveling into Dallas or the south end of Richardson is a good 15 miles down the road," Monnette said.

Overall the sales equals tax dollars for the city. Plano estimates that in years past, they've lost half a million dollar each year in sales tax revenue to neighboring cities.

"Every day for the past five years I've picked up the phone and said no we don't sell liquor in Plano," O'Connor said. "Today that's finally ended I can say 'Yes! Come and see us'."

A Hood County sheriff's deputy that had been shot in the head after responding to a disturbance call has died.

Sgt. Lance McLean, a 38-year-old Hood County sheriff's deputy, was shot in the head at a Granbury home while responding to a disturbance call, the Texas Department of Public Safety said. McLean died from his injuries at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

As word spread of McLean's passing, law enforcement officers arrived from multiple cities to honor McLean's memory outside JPS Hospital. With their police lights flashing, officers stood at attention in the street as the hearse pulled out of the hospital.

"He was one of the best.  The very best," says Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds.

Deeds said he had big plans for McLean and expected to promote him through the ranks.

"He excels in everything he's ever done," says Deeds.  "Great guy who's always out to help, help people, help everybody.  He was always there when you needed him."

Granbury Police Chief Mitch Galvan knew McLean as well.

"He was just a tremendous leader.  He had a great sense of humor.  A very caring man," says Galvan.  "His family was his life and his job was his life."

McLean was a SWAT officer and field training officer who mentored younger deputies. He is survived by his wife and two children with special needs.

"This has been a tremendous loss," says Chief Galvan.  "You can't replace Lance McLean."

Two accounts have been set up to help his widow and two children.  They are at Hico's First National Bank and Community Bank in Granbury.

McLean will be buried in Hico but the day and time of the funeral are pending.

Chad Davis, a Granbury police officer, was also injured in the shootout. Davis sustained a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound to an upper extremity believed to be an arm or shoulder. He was transported to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth.

Granbury Police Chief Mitch Galvan said Saturday that Davis was being moved out of intensive care. In addition to Davis' shoulder wound, Galvan said doctors found three bullet fragments in his knee.

The shooting suspect, Ricky Don McCommas, 49, of Joshua, was later killed during a shootout with Granbury police just 50 feet from the doors of Granbury City Hall.

Community Mourns Slain Sheriff's Deputy

On Saturday night, a group of Granbury citizens tied blue ribbons on trees, light posts and street signs near city hall in honor of Sgt. Lance McLean.

Joyce Mashburn knew Sgt. McLean through his work as a deputy and says his death has deeply effected her personally.

"If you ever met him, he was such  wonderful deputy," Mashburn said. "He loved his work, he helped out everybody he could help out. The only way I could think of to try and give back is to paint Granbury blue."

A memorial is also growing at the Hood County Sheriff's Office. A patrol vehicle is parked in the front grass and flowers and ribbons are being added to it to remember Sgt. McLean.

"We've lost a great deputy, heaven has a new hero," Mashburn said. "We're going to really, really, miss him."

DPS Details Gun Battle

DPS spokesman Sgt. Lonny Haschel said McLean was dispatched to a residence in Oak Trail Shores shortly before 11 a.m. When he arrived, he made contact with McCommas. Moments later, shots were fired and McLean was struck in the head, Haschel said.

Another Hood County deputy responding to the call provided a description of McCommas' van as it left the scene -- white with its windows shot out.

A neighbor told NBC 5 that McCommas lives in Joshua and drove to the house in Granbury, where he started a ruckus that led to the shooting. Deputies were then called to the scene, the neighbor said.

Granbury police officers later spotted McCommas' van as he pulled into the Granbury City Hall parking lot. It is unclear if McCommas chose to enter the parking lot or was forced there by pursuing police officers.

Haschel said McCommas then got out of the van and exchanged gunfire with Granbury officers.

McCommas was hit several times and died at the scene.

New Details Revealed on Saturday

Sheriff Deeds revealed on Saturday that the suspect, Ricky McCommas, had a criminal trespass warning to stay away from the home on Edgecliff Court north of Granbury, where Sgt. McLean responded and was shot.

Deeds said McCommas was due in court in Johnson County on Friday but never showed up. McCommas was arrested last year for sexual assault involving a minor.

Chief Galvan described the gun battle has happening so quick that he heard the gunshots from inside city hall, but that it was over by the time he reached the scene out front. He described McCommas as having an arsenal.

Witnesses See, Hear Gun Battle

Several witnesses who were working at a residence just 15 feet away from where the van pulled into the City Hall parking lot saw it all go down.

"He had a cold look on his face. He was going to go for them," Joe Vanderveer said. "He put it in park, looked at us, he got out. He turned and then the cop cars pulled up, because they pulled up about 15 seconds after he pulled up. And then the shooting started."

Gary Farina, who is opening a restaurant next to City Hall, a half block north of the town square, said he heard 40 to 50 shots.

"We kept hearing a barrage of gunfire," he said.

Farina and Vanderveer took cover on their outdoor patio before hiding inside the business. They said McCommas appeared to be wearing a vest, but they were unsure if it was a tactical vest or bulletproof vest.

"He definitely looked like he had a purpose in mind," Vanderveer said.

At least 50 evidence markers were placed at bullet casings and other evidence at the scene. What appeared to be an assault rifle was next to McCommas' body for several hours as the investigation continued.

"Those of you who've been to the scene saw how big a scene it is, how many details are going to have to be looked at, so it's going to take some time for everyone to go out and interview witnesses, take a look at physical evidence on the scene, send officers out and really comb those areas," Haschel said.

Haschel had no other details to offer about the shootings, saying only it was an ongoing investigation with large, multiple scenes.

Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and Joshua police spent hours Friday evening at McCommas' home along Joshua Boulevard. They removed several guns, boxes of bullets and what appeared to be body armor.

Neighbors said McCommas had been buying and selling guns to make ends meet since he lost his job as a security guard at Texas Health Resources Harris Methodist Hospital following a sexual assault arrest in August.

A man who identified himself as a friend of McCommas said he always carried a gun with him but was a nice man who was a good neighbor.

The case is being investigated by the Texas Rangers, the Hood County Sheriff's Office and the Granbury Police Department.

Multiple NBC 5 reporters and editors including Ben Russell, Chris Van Horne, Kevin Cokely,  Greg Janda, and Mark Schnyder contributed to this report.

Editor's note: DPS originally reported the name of the gunman as 60-year-old Richard Randall McComas and then later identified the gunman as 49-year-old Ricky Don McComas.

Record Crowds Expected in San Francisco for Gay Pride

advertisement

San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said new estimates for the Gay Pride Parade on Sunday have 1.5 million people making their way to Market Street.

He said it will rival and possibly top the San Francisco Giants World Series parade.

"Even though the World Series was huge, this could quite possibly be larger in light of the decision that just came down from the Supreme Court - but it will be just as happy as the World Series," Suhr said.

He said his officers will be out in force, just in case to ensure a peaceful event.

The increased crowd follows this week's historic court decision to strike down Prop 8. The normal estimate for the parade is a million people.

Police said safety at the event will be a top priority.

Police said they are urging Pride participants to be cautious with strangers and to report suspicious situations.

Pride celebrations got an early start with Wednesday's Castro District rally that drew thousands of people to Castro Street.

Many San Francisco hotels are sold out for the weekend.

The Pride Festival happens on Saturday and Sunday and includes more than 20 stages throughout the Mid-Market area with musical acts, performances and countless dancing opportunities.

The 18th display of the Pink Triangle will go up on Twin Peaks on 7 a.m. Saturday morning before a 10:30 a.m. ceremony with city and Pride officials.

Saturday night the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will host an alcohol free party in the Castro.

Sunday's parade is the main event and starts at 10:30 a.m. and winds down Market Street ending at the Civic Center.

Merchants have been given a "heads up," Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District executive director Andrea Aiello said, and extra staff has been called in. Aiello said she expects crowds to "stream into the Castro after the parade" but the effect of the Supreme Court rulings will be felt throughout. "All of San Francisco is buzzing," she said.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and crowded streets along Market Street, downtown and Civic Center areas and the Castro District.

Details about service changes and other transit plans are available at www.sfmta.com/calendar/san-francisco-pride. More information about Pride events is available at www.sfpride.org.

A helicopter with five people on board was forced to make an emergency landing in the Hudson River near Manhattan's West Side Sunday, authorities said.

According to a city official familiar with the investigation, the helicopter's pilot made a controlled landing in the water after the engine lost power at around noon. Two adults and two teenagers from Sweden were on board at the time.

The four passengers and the pilot were taken out of the helicopter and transported by jet ski to the 79th Street Boat Basin in Riverside Park. They suffered only minor injuries and refused medical attention, authorities said.

The helicopter, a Bell 206, is registered to NY Helicopter Charter, an official from the FAA said. It was being towed by the Coast Guard to the Boat Basin Sunday afternoon.

A man arrested Wednesday with bomb-making materials in his car had drugs and an alligator in his home, a federal agent testified Friday.

Clayton Earthman, 43, was arrested after police said he ran a stop sign near Fair Park.

An officer said Earthman had a gun in his car. A search later revealed he had bomb-making material and notes on how to make bombs, police said.

Earthman claimed to be a "Doomsday Prepper." A cable TV show by the same name profiles people preparing for the end of the world.

On Thursday, agents with the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives searched his house near Pleasant Grove.

They found 15 marijuana plants, bomb-making material, and an alligator, according to a Dallas police report.

Neighbors say they saw agents carry two alligators from the home on Woodard Avenue.

"That's scary," said neighbor Susan Collins. "We didn't know he had all that."

At his court appearance, a judge ordered Earthman held without bond because he was a danger to the community.

Dallas police say a man who was fired from his job at a barber shop shot his former boss late Friday afternoon.

Just after 5 p.m. Dallas police officers were called to a shooting at Ramon's Barber Shop in the 300 block of West Jefferson Boulevard.

Dallas police said 30-year-old Charles Hooks knocked on the back door of the barber shop and was let in by a customer. Police said he went up to 29-year-old Alejandro "Alex" Fernandez , who was cutting someone's hair, and shot him in the chest.

Hooks had been fired by Fernandez earlier in the day according to police.

Fernandez was taken to Methodist Central Hospital where he later died.

Hooks was arrested a short time after the shooting. He has been charged with murder and his bond is set at $250,000.

Shooting Victim Was Building His Business

Fernandez was the new owner of the longtime Oak Cliff barber shop. He'd bought Ramon's Barber Shop about three weeks ago according to friends.

Linda Jones who worked nearby said she was fond of her new neighbor.

"He had told me he had just bought the business and he really wanted to make it grow," said Jones. "For this young man to take his life the way he did, it just doesn't make any sense at all."

Fernandez was a married father of two with another child on the way. Friends say he owned another barber shop in town called Ace Chop Shop.

"I can only tell you he had great girls," said family friend Caroline Lozano. "His wife was amazing. They stood by him. He was expanding his business and the fact he was growing as a businessman and he was doing a great job at it and he had a lot of potential and his life was taken."

San Francisco Church Hoping to House Dead Pets in Basement

During his lifetime, Saint Francis of Assisi was famously devoted to animals. Paintings and statues depict the saint frolicking with birds, dogs and other beasts.

The lore of San Francisco's namesake seemed an ideal fit for a city where dogs outnumber kids. Inside the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi in San Francisco's North Beach, tributes to the saint's life abound, especially in its annual blessing of the animals.

On a recent weekend, the shrine's rector Father Gregory Coiro blessed some 500 pets during the two-day stretch.

"Mostly dogs," said Coiro, wearing a brown robe and tangled beard. "But there were a few cats and a few angora rabbits."

The Shrine has long opened its doors to living pets in the spirit of Saint Francis. But now, it's also opening them to the dead. In a newly discovered grotto beneath the shrine's front steps, Coiro has envisioned the building of a columbarium to house the ashes of the dearly departed of the pet world.

"The people who bring their pets here can be Catholic or they can be non-Catholic," said Coiro. "Cause afterall, the animals have no religion."

Currently the concrete pillared cave looks like the ruins of a Roman temple.

Though work on the site has not yet begun, the Shrine recently released a brochure with depictions of glass-walled partitions where pets' ashes will be interned.

Visitors will be greeted by a large portrait of Saint Francis himself, and a video monitor will play video loops of pets enshrined in the space. In another corner, a large memorial will pay tribute to police and rescue dogs, like those who searched for survivors and bodies amid the rubble of the Twin Towers in New York on 9/11.

"As somebody walks through and visits the columbarium it'll be like an on-going history of people involved with the shrine; animals that have been involved in families lives," said Bill McLaughlin, a church volunteer who's helping organize the construction.

Some of the shrine's neighbors have complained they weren't notified in advance of plans to store ashes amid hundreds of businesses. Fabio Giotta, one of the owners of nearby Caffe Trieste said he was surprised by plans to build a "pet cemetery in a national shrine." Coiro said the shrine hasn't yet applied for permits from the city.

Both the San Francisco Health and Planning Departments referred calls on the matter to each other. A Health Department Spokeswoman said the department was only interested in dead animals when people ate them.

Coiro admitted the columbarium would also help generate money for the upkeep of the shrine.

He said the church hadn't determined the fees for housing pet cremains, although the brochure was seeking donations to the project in the $1000 to $40,000 range.

Coiro said he was moved by his childless sister who considered her dogs family, and was distraught when they died.

"I understand for many, many people, their animals are very dear to them," said Coiro.

Girl at Center of Lung Transplant Controversy Out of Coma

Ten days after a successful double-lung transplant surgery, 10-year-old Sarah Murnaghan is out of a coma and responding to questions, according to a family spokesperson.

Murnaghan received her new lungs on June 12, after spending three months at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with end-stage cystic fibrosis.

Sarah's mother Janet posted an update on her Facebook page Saturday.

"Sarah's less confused this afternoon. She is pointing to every tube that's coming out of her and wanting me to explain it. She seems less scared, seems to understand she got her transplant. All your prayers are working. Thank you!!!"

The Newtown Square girl made headlines after her parents battled national policy over how children under 12 are placed on the waiting list for donated lungs.

Her new lungs came from an adult donor, after a judge decided that the under 12 rule could be modified in her case-- a decision that put her on the adult list.

The transplant isn't a cure for cystic fibrosis, but it can extend her life by years.

Nelson Cruz got the decisive hit for the second straight game with a two-run homer in the third inning and Martin Perez prevailed in a matchup of rookie starters as the Texas Rangers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Saturday night.

Shelby Miller (8-5) allowed two homers for the second time in three starts and didn't make it out of the sixth against the team the Cardinals beat in the 2011 World Series making its first regular-season visit to Busch Stadium.

A.J. Pierzynski also hit a two-run homer for Texas, which goes for a three-game sweep on Sunday night with Nick Tepesch (3-6, 4.84) facing Adam Wainwright (10-4, 2.37).

The first two games have been sellouts and the finale was supposed to be a matchup of aces, but the Rangers are saving Yu Darvish for the Yankees Tuesday in New York.

California Waits for Same-Sex Marriage Decision

A long-awaited ruling on the legality of California's Prop 8 is expected to be handed down this coming  week.

It will be the U.S. Supreme Court's first decision on the issue of same-sex marriage.

People on both side of the debate have been anxiously waiting for the justices to rule on the voter approved initiative.

The ruling has been expected to come down sometime in June and the justices typically issue decisions on Monday or Thursday.

Since there is only one Monday and one Thursday left in the month, anticipation for the ruling is at a fever pitch.

The Justices considered arguments from attorneys representing Prop 8 supporters and opponents in

March. The hearing came after the Supreme Court granted in December the review of Prop 8 — approved by California voters in November 2008 — and the Federal Defense of Marriage Act, also argued before the court in March.

The Court has several options regarding Prop 8, including a decision to issue no ruling at all. Decisions on Prop 8 and DOMA are expected later this month after the Court did not issue a ruling during its Monday session.

The ban could be upheld or struck down in a ruling that applies to California or a broader decision that applies to all states. The court also could determine that state ballot sponsors had no legal right or standing to defend Prop 8 in federal court.

How that decision would impact the status of same-sex marriages in California is unclear. After the hearings in March, several Justices expressed doubt that the case should be before the court and suggested the case could be dismissed with no ruling, according to the Associated Press.

Nine states — Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and Washington — and Washington D.C. allow same-sex marriages.

Minnesota, Rhode Island and Delaware have approved same-sex marriage legislation, but laws in those states have yet to go into effect.

The Justices considered arguments regarding a ruling by a San Francisco-based appeals court that struck down the voter-approved ban. The court ruled the state could not take away the same-sex marriage right granted by the state Supreme Court before the 2008 election.

But the debate stretches back years through court cases and elections, including the March 2000 approval of Prop 22, which defined marriage in California as between a man and a woman. That law was ruled unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court in May 2008, and an estimated 18,000 same-sex couples were married during a brief window before Prop 8's approval in the November election that year.

California's same-sex marriage ban was left in effect during the lengthy appeals process that followed. The legal battle included a landmark 2010 same-sex marriage trial in which Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled the ban unconstitutional. Walker said the law "both unconstitutionally burdens the exercise of the fundamental right to marry and creates an irrational classification on the basis of sexual orientation."

After appeals by Prop 8 supporters who said voters should not be invalidated "based on just one judge's opinion," a San Francisco court ruled in a 2-1 decision in November 2012 that the Walker's ruling properly interpreted the U.S. Constitution. The court ruled that the ban's "only effect was to take away that important and legally significant designation."

As attorneys argued over the issue in court, public attitudes toward same-sex marriage shifted. In 2001, 57 percent of Americans opposed same-sex marriage, according to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. In a poll conducted in March 2013, 49 percent of Americans said they support same-sex marriage.

A second case before the high court challenges the Defense of Marriage Act — also known as DOMA. The act blocks federal recognition of same-sex couples in states where they are allowed to marry.

President Barack Obama called the law enacted in 1996 unconstitutional. Arguments in the DOMA case are scheduled for Wednesday.
