In the crowd of thousands of Cook Childrens' 5K participants, there were the amateurs like Natalie Calderon.

"I never really been in a race and this is my first time racing," she said.

12-year-old Cryslan Tucker is a little more experienced. She finished in 19 minutes and encouraged others to run.

"It gets you healthier, it makes it easier to do the other sports," she said.

"This marathon, and the 10k, and 5k continues to grow and grow," Mayor Price said. "We love showcasing Fort Worth and we love our healthy lifestyle."

For parents like Marci Grubbs from Saginaw, the step toward a healthy lifestyle is welcome news.

"It's very encouraging it boosts their self-esteem and teaches them that they can do anything," Grubbs said.

There were many moments during the race when fathers and sons crossed the finish line together. It turned the 3.1 mile course into a family bonding experience.

"It's just like the camaraderie that you have with a football team except it's with my son and i," said Jesse Hejany, the father of 7-year-old Hauss. "We went out there and shed a little together and it was just fun."

The Cowtown 2013 continues Sunday with the Half Marathon, Ultra Marathon and Marathon races. Click on this sentence for more information.  As of Saturday evening, more than 26,000 people have signed up for the weekend's events.

Taya Kyle Honored by Dallas Stars

Thousands of people honored former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and his wife, Taya, on Saturday night.

On February 11, Taya Kyle moved everyone who watched her husband's memorial service at Cowboys Stadium. Saturday night she said she was overwhelmed by the cheers for her and her husband at the American Airlines Center.

"We would like to thank and welcome Taya Kyle," the public address announcer said Saturday.
A thunderous ovation from the Dallas Stars and their fans welcomed and honored Taya and Chris Kyle.

"I know he'd be humbled," Taya Kyle said. "It's an honor of course as his wife. I'm thrilled. I love to see it, what better way to honor someone you love than to see an outpouring of love for them?"

Taya Kyle was on hand to drop the ceremonial puck with Miss Texas USA Ali Nugent.

"She's a great person," Nugent said. "This was already planned for me to do and I figured why not invite her. Her husband is a true hero and he deserves to be honored."

For Taya Kyle though it was also a chance to get away from the last three weeks of grief, if even for just a few hours.  Kyle's husband and his friend Chad Littlefield were gunned down at a shooting range in Erath County February 2. Eddie Ray Routh, a Marine reservist, has been charged in their deaths.

"It definitely doesn't seem real sometimes," Kyle said. "I think we're actually coping as well as we can. I feel like living with Chris, being with Chris, being married to Chris, we all got a lot of strength that we can draw from him and our experiences in the past and do it as well as we possibly can."

And having the kind of support she saw on Saturday night helps too.

"It's overwhelming," Kyle said. "I mean, think about the worst things that you can go through and the overwhelming support, love and patriotism, it's fantastic.  I love the patriotism, I love my husband, I wish he was here. I'm proud to be here in his place, it's cool."

Taya Kyle says she's busy being a mom and raising her two children. She did say she hopes to keep many of the projects her husband is involved with alive for him.

Nugent is in the running for Miss USA. She's started an organization called "Crown's for Heroes" which builds homes for service members seriously injured overseas and have special needs.

She's already raised money to help build several homes already and hopes to build more by the time Miss USA comes around. For more information click here.

Nearly 100 Rescued from Dallas Zoo Monorail

Dallas firefighters were called to the Dallas Zoo after a malfunction stranded approximately 100 people on a monorail. The ride will be shutdown Sunday.

Dallas firefighters were called to the Dallas Zoo after a malfunction stranded 93 people on a monorail.

Dallas Fire-Rescue was called to the scene at about 3:30 p.m.

Fortunately, the monorail stopped at a location that was easily reached by firefighters.  Using as many as five extension ladders, firefighters were able to remove all of the trapped passengers from the monorail in about a half hour.

"It stopped a very fortunate place because it was such a low point there, very accessible," Sean Greene, Dallas Zoo Vice President of Guest Services. "It didn't impede any animals, didn't impede the experience over the elephants. But obviously for those 93 passengers they wouldn't like to have completed their journey."

There were no injuries in connection with the malfunction or rescue but certainly rattled nerves.

"Actually [this was] my wife's first time on the monorail," said Jerry Davis, one of the people rescued. "I've been on it once before and this was definitely a first."

The cause of the malfunction has not been determined.  The monorail will be shutdown on Sunday.

Shooting hoops is no problem for one otter at the Oregon Zoo.

Eddie the otter was trained by zoo staff to dunk a basketball in a small plastic hoop. However the exercise isn't simply for some playtime.

He is currently 15 which is pretty old for an otter, and with age comes ailments as with all creatures. His fur was once a rich brown color but now his coat is creamy white around his face and neck. He also has developed arthritis in his elbows. Dunking the basketball helps the balling animal's arthritic joints.

He usually sinks the ball with ease. But when he does miss, he hits the boards, grabs the rebound and goes up again until he scores.

Eddie makes most of his shots. But when he misses, he hits the boards, grabs the rebound and goes up again until he scores.

Sea otters have incredible dexterity which explains Eddie's talent, according to keeper Jenny DeGroot.
